September 2005

Thursday 1st
We have started clearing Amanda's old vegetable garden of nettles, brambles and a few asparagus plants which were all that remained of Amanda's self sufficiency drive. I also ordered a poly-tunnel which we will need to protect some of the plants during the winter months.

Wednesday 7th
Amazing. I receive the forms from the RHS for tickets for Gala Night next year. It seems almost surreal to be focussing on the number of people you want to invite to a party at Chelsea next May when you haven't even grown the plants yet!

Thursday 8th
I have a meeting with Kevin White from Squires Landscapes to discuss the construction of our garden. It is always useful to have an early meeting so that the contractor can flag up any problems which may arise from the design. Our biggest problem this year is going to be the cranage we will need to put in place our big trees, some of which weigh nearly 5 tons! Cranes on Main Avenue are always a problem as they block the flow of traffic around the site, however Kevin is hopeful that we will be able to get a crane in the road between the two adjacent gardens.

Tuesday 13th
I post off the additional information that the RHS gardens committee needed on the size of our trees, our finalised plant list and revised drawings with proposed new sculpture.

Thursday 22nd
The tunnel has arrived and we start to put it up. It's amazing how big the area looks now that it has been cleared but our 48 foot by 18 foot tunnel soon brings it down to size. We also cover the whole area with Mipex to keep down the weeds.

Monday 26th
We finally manage to find a calm day in which we can put the polythene skin on the tunnel. Our first load of compost arrives and finally we can start sowing seeds and planting plants. I have a phone call from Sue Hill who is very excited at the idea of doing a sculpture for Chelsea. It is going to be quite a challenge for her fitting this into her busy schedule, but Sue and her brother Peter, who makes the metal framework for the sculpture, are really excited at the prospect of creating something which will be a centrepiece in one of the big gardens at Chelsea.

Thursday 29th
We have our 4head meeting this month and for the first time Sue Hill joins us for the event. Sue and Peter come up from Cornwall with a huge bag of clay and at the end of the meeting we sit around Michael's boardroom table while Sue and Peter create a model of what they think the Dream Garden MudMaid will look like. Sue also does a beautiful little pencil sketch. She and Peter are going to be looking at different mediums in which to create her as, for Chelsea, we are not going to be able to create the sculpture on site. We will need to put something together much earlier in order to get a reasonable plant cover in place by May. We discuss plants which may be suitable for the sculpture and decide to look at Ladies Bedstraw (Galium Verum) and Camomile as two potential coverings for the sculpture

Friday 30th
We have our first delivery of plants for Chelsea. 200 white foxgloves for the woodland.
