July 2005

Wednesday 6th/Thursday 7th
Amanda and I spend two days going over the preliminary plant lists for the garden. The colour palette for the plants in the garden is very soft, predominantly white, though with pale shades of blue, mauve and yellow. The other prerequisite for the plants to be used in the garden is that they should have soothing and calming properties. Many of them would be soporific with just a few which have alleged hallucinogenic properties. When selecting plants for Chelsea one has to try also to choose plants which will be flowering in May. Amanda and I pored over copies of old herbals like Culpepper and Garrard and more modern books on the subject by Jekka McVicar and David Hoffman. Eventually we came up with a short list of 125 plants, 75% of which had the required properties and the others which were needed to emphasise the two habitats in the garden of woodland and meadow.

Friday 22nd
I visit sculptress Jane McLeod. She sculptures in bronze and has created a series of sculptures inspired be the seed pods of plants. I absolutely love these pieces with their natural lines and feel that they may be appropriate for the island site. I take a lot of photographs of the pieces she has in her garden to present to the next 4head meeting.
